What can happen to Christmas Presents with Waggy Tails.

Once upon a time, just over a year ago, a man purchased 4 Labradors from a breeder. Because the man didn't want to spoil any of his children more than the others, he gave each one a lovely little puppy with a waggy tail, cute face and licky tongue.

All went well with the 4 little pups but they grew and grew and needed exercise. At the age of 14 months old, none of the 4 dogs possessed a collar or lead and exercise consisted of allowing the dogs to roam free.

A year later, these beautiful dogs were hurredly returned to the breeder from where they came (on Christmas Eve I believe!) because the person that had purchased them had fallen upon hard times. The breeder took the dogs in, but unfortunately no longer has the facilites to cater for these lovely dogs. In an effort to ensure that the dogs were looked after, cared for properly and found wonderful homes he contacted Labrador Rescue and asked for our help.

What does it take to cater for 4 dogs I can hear you ask - well at least two of the girls are pregnant, the third may be and the boy of course is fine.

The Dogs

Gracie is 14 months old - she is heavily pregnant and we expect her to have her pups within a week.

Also 14 minths old, Rose is also pregnant. We are not sure at the moment how far gone she is so will be arranging a scan to check her over and work out the date she is due.

Also 14 months old - We do not think storm is pregnant - however we will be arranging a scan to check her out. If she is not pregnant she will be speyed as soon as possible and need a loving home to go to straight after her operation as returning to a kennel will be totally unsuitable for her.

Where are we up to?

The dogs arrived at rescue today - a big thank you to Ky who transported the dogs to the rescue.

Storm and Rose are booked in for their scan on Monday. This will tell us when Rose is due and whether Storm is pregnant or not.

Gracie has been taken by Carol who will care for her during her pregnancy and look after her pups when they are born. Rose has been taken by Sue who will be looking after her during her pregnancy and caring for her pups. Both Gracie and Rose will need homes once the pups have left them but we will deal with this later.

Gracie has been introduced to Carols dogs and is getting along with them very well - Latest photos below of Gracie and Carols:

The whelping box is set up and ready to go! A very big thank you to both Carol and Sue for taking on the job of looking after mothers and pups!

Whilst the rescue has had a successful fundraising time over the Christmas period, we do have to be conscious of the fact that it costs approximately £30,000 a year to run the rescue. Taking on dogs that need treatment and care can be a substantial drain on rescue funds and it is important that we plan and use our funds carefully so that we can respond immediately to needy cases such as this.

It is, at the moment, impossible to know how much we will have to pay to fund the treatment of the dogs, injections and worming etc for the pups and any other unexpected expenses. As the dogs are so young, and come from lines where litters are large, it may be necessary for one or or both dogs to have a caesarean section and a possible cost of £250 (approx) each, 2 of the girls are being scanned which is another expense but necessary, we have just ordered a roll of profleece to ensure they are all warm and comfortable at a cost of £155 - there will also be worming tablets, injections etc to be covered for an unknown number of pups.

With this in mind, I will be putting a running total of any expenses paid out for these dogs and a donation button for anyone who would like to make a small contribution towards their care. As with anything, we are always very grateful of any support we receive and all money will be used to help and care for the dogs.

Bills paid out Donations received

£155 - Profleece

£128.35 - scans (2)

£215 - breeding pen

£58.59 puppy food

£132.90 vet

Total so far: £689.84

The breeding pen will be sold when finished with. The rescue has one but with two litters on the go we have had to invest in a second. Worming, injections and other expenses will be added as we pay them

£1348.00
