Sam is getting on just fine Gary, thank you for asking.
John and I reckon that he looks a completely different dog.
When I first picked him up he was thinner than a Lab should be, Glenys said (at the time) that since he'd been with her, he'd put on weight but she told me that he could do with putting a bit more on.

Because he was thinner, he looked "jowly" to me, a sort of "grandad of a dog" !

Well, he's put weight on and he doesn't look "jowly" anymore, he looks like a Lab should look (well to my mind anyway).

He doesn't nick grub anymore either, he has for dinner what Benji and Mick (bless him, :love5: when we still had him) have, which is chicken or lamb, which we cook for them with rice mixed in with a "doggy" mixer, so that they get the "doggy vitamins" that they should.

Once Sam cottoned on that he gets his breakfast and his dinner at a regular time, plus his biscuits and a bit of our dinner, because we have always saved a bit of ours at the end, for the dogs, he seemed to pack up being a Fagin!

My late hubby and I used to save a bit of our dinner for Mick and funnily enough, John and his late wife, Brenda, used to do the same with Benji.

I think all this nicking business stemmed from the fact that maybe he didn't have quite enough to eat in his previous life and was hungry.

Having said that, in case his previous owners still read this forum, that is in no way meant as an insult, just an observation.

It is so nice not having to anchor all the food bins down and not find the remnants of something he'd nicked all over the floor!

Benji (our collie cross) had a stroke a few months back, or at least we think he did, it could have been a middle ear infection, the vet reckons it was middle ear, but we think that it might have been a bit of both, we also think that he's gone blind in one eye, as he still walks with his head tilted on the side.
Anyhow, when they settle down for the night, Benji waits until Sam has laid down and lays so close to him, that he's almost on top of him!

The only thing is, because our dogs have always slept in our bedroom, in their own beds or on their own quilts, because Sam is a black Lab, and Benji is mostly brown, you have to watch where you're putting your feet!

I will be posting some more pictures soon, but I've been ill all over Christmas and New Year and only just getting back to normal (whatever that is!)

Sam says a big hello to everyone :1954:

Take care everyone
Jill

Great update - looking forward to seeing some pics too. As for Sam knowing his tea time - it's really amazed me in the year that we've had Tasha that she knows almost to the minute when her tea is due!! She starts pacing around and looking at us so pleadingly as if to say "I know its a few minutes early, but its NEARLY tea time so please take pity on me and FEED ME NOW" - if our clocks stopped working we'd have no trouble in keeping track of the days / hours - sounds like your house is the same!! :1962:

When I had my Mick, bless him, we'd had him from a pup until he was 15.

My late husband, Harry, worked from home and I used to come in for my lunch at just after 12.00 noon.

We had a chair in our bedroom that was Harry's mum's, and when she died, Harry kept it, we used to nickname it "Nanny's chair".

Anyway, Harry used to say to Mick "go and sit on Nanny's chair and tell me when Mum (me) gets home".

Mick used to do this, then go and nudge Harry, to tell him that I was coming, but the weird thing was, we worked out, that I must have been just turning the corner of our road when Mick went and told Harry !

It go so, that about five to twelve everyday, Mick used to take himself off and sit on this chair and look out of the window, then come and tell Harry that I was coming along!

People who are not doggy people say that dogs are daft, pah!

Regards
Jill

Peaceful !!

Benji is so quiet, it was SO peaceful :1945:

It's great having a Labrador about the house again though, you miss the lumbering about and the treading on your bare feet, especially when their claws manage to catch the "quick" of your toenails ! (ouch).

You miss their manic tails wagging for all their worth and knocking cups of tea (or even worse, a glass of gin and lemonade) from the coffee table.

You miss their adorable, cuddly, squashy grins !

You just miss everything about these lovely woofers.

I'm pleased that I overcame my own infinate grief of losing my beloved Mick, to give a second chance of happiness and love to one of these whirlwind "Whirling Dervishes" !

I think Mick would be pleased.

Glad you're feeling better Sara

Take care

Glenys, you're very welcome, I do tell Sam on some occasions that he has got to remember that he is the great, great grandson of your beloved Mattie, who was a class act to follow.

I reminded him of this fact a couple of days ago, he put his head on the side, in that endearing way that Labs do, as if they're taking it all in, then promptly decided to wash himself where his goolies once were! :1968:

So much for taking notice of Mum :1962:

Benji is fine, thank you for asking.
