Happy Annaversary dear little Anna :2803: :2803: So glad to hear the specialists have got to the bottom of your allergies. We all knew you were so special, and special enough to have your own vaccine made and shipped over from Holland! Amazing! Poor mum's bank account though but i'm sure you're worth it

Hi Everyone,

Just thought I'd drop you a quick update just to make sure you don't forget me! Well, it's always busy here so I'll just fill you in on some of my more exciting adventures.

I have done two full days picking up with Mum and Lud now - one in Gloucestershire and one in Lincolnshire. I wish Mum could take us picking up EVERY day - it's so much fun! I picked up and brought back my very first pheasant in Gloucestershire (with a little bit of encouragement) - i picked it up very gently by the tip of a wing feather with my front teeth as I didn't want to hurt it but all that happened was that the wing came up and the rest of the pheasant stayed on the floor so I quickly realised that I had to pick it up by its body. I trotted carefully back to Mum with it and she was very pleased and Lud gave me an approving nod. I guess he wants me to look good at the job as he has been responsible for teaching me.

Well, after that there was no stopping me! I picked up loads - here's how I do it. I watch the pheasants land on the floor (Lud says this is called "marking them down") and then I have to remember where they are until the horn blows. Then Mum will let me go and pick one up. I run like the wind to it and then I have to open my mouth really wide (those of you who know me know that I only have a little face and mouth) and get a good hold of it and then I race back to Mum and put it really carefully into her hands. I was a bit cross at first that she wouldn't let me have it back - a bit mean I thought - after all, I did the hard work of running to fetch it and carry it back not her, but as soon as I realised that I could then go and collect another I didn't mind. I suppose I can't carry loads of birds at once so Mum may as well do a bit of honest work and carry my finds.

I did two really good retrieves from some weird vegetation (Mum says it is Rape) - it was really thick and very wet but I still found the two birds that no-one else had managed to find! And Mum said that was fantastic because the scent was none existent and the crop was too high (my tummy height) to see the pheasants lying in it.

So that was Gloucestershire and no-one there could believe that it was my first full day picking up and that I had never picked up before!!! Couldn't quite believe it myself either - you may remember from my past updates that at the end of last season I wasn't quite sure about picking the birds up although I was great at marking them down.

The next shoot was close to home in Lincolnshire and I picked up another type of game bird - much smaller than the pheasants - Lud says it was a partridge and I must remember all these different makes of bird. (He'll probably test me before I'm allowed my tea every night or something!) Also, a pheasant landed in a small lake on one of the drives and I was so excited I begged Mum to let me get it as I have done so much practising water retrieves (see my previous updates) but had never done a real one.

I know it wasn't a duck or anything but its nearly the same. I flew across the grass and into the lake and swam back with the pheasant and deposited it neatly at Mum's feet! Mum said that it was a brilliant retrieve but not to get conceited as there was still a lot to work on. I think she means that sometimes when Lud has a pheasant that I want to carry, I pester him a bit for it and he gets cross but I only want to help! She says I also have to learn to be steadier whilst the shooting is happening and sit still without bouncing around the place like a kangaroo but it is hard when it is SOOOO exciting! I hadn't met anyone from this shoot before so they didn't know how much picking up I had done. They didn't believe Mum when she said it was only my second day ever of actually picking up!

When we got home after both days we both got a Jumbabone and then slept in front of the fire as we had worked so hard. You may ask where Evil Hairy Brother was all the time we were doing an honest day's work - fast asleep on Mum's bed!!!

One other bit of news - I have started my Immunotherapy course - I have to go to the vets every two weeks at the moment for my vaccine. I quite like it there and drag Mum through the door because everyone gives me a big fuss and I have treats when I go in the little room with Mum and the vet. I always have a lady doctor because I don't like being in small spaces with strange men even if Mum IS there with me to protect me.

I think that's all for now but I'll keep you updated on my activities.

Love Anna XXX

Hello Everyone,

Note from Anna's Mum. I usually don't put anything on here as this is Anna's update space not mine but I thought I would sneak in a quick note whilst she wasn't looking.

Anna is the most delightful little girl ever - she manages to be hysterically funny, outlandishly naughty and sometimes downright stubborn whilst still maintaining an expression of complete innocence. She can do something naughty (like jumping up to try and grab food of the table or the kitchen) and when you say "No" she just laughs at you, wags her tail and either leaps on you or trots off.

She is incredibly quick to learn things (both good and naughty!) and loves working for food and a fuss. Her nose is phenomenal and she works very carefully and methodically with huge enthusiasm - she quarters the ground but usually doing more air scenting than ground scenting then she stops still, sniffs the air carefully and zooms in to the retrieve. She never gets it wrong either.

She is still very much a princess (apart from mud baths) and I thought we would be the laughing stock of the shooting field if she refused to go on rough ground, crops or in the woods and would only pick up off bowling greens but as soon as she is out there and sees the birds come down it's like she has put her Kevlar suit and boots on because she just plunges into places she would never dream of going if there was no shooting going on.

She is getting braver by the day and once she has learnt something she never forgets it - she might however, debate as to whether she will oblige by doing the requested action (i.e. go out into the garden last thing at night if it is cold or wet). When she first arrived she wouldn't jump fences or stiles or even into the travel capsule in the truck but as soon as she learnt she could she delighted in doing it - on her own terms obviously!

Once she has found a person she feels happy with, she mugs them every time she sees them - we have progressed from jumping off the ground with all four paws to simply hurling ourselves on the victim! I have to keep my eyes open for potential victims and be ready to shout "watch out for Anna" as she travels at the speed of light to her quarry. She has her own fan club, all of whom let her (and encourage her) to behave in the most outlandish fashion.

She seems really happy doing her jobs and playing with Lud and friends. She gets so excited when picking up she trembles and sometimes screams on the first drive until she settles. Ok, I know she would be chucked out of the trialling competitions but who cares - she's loving what she does so that's all that matters. She is completely wired - I hate to think what she would be like without the work and the exercise - a complete nightmare I think! She is very sweet and loving but is always ready to try and turn a quiet stroking session into boisterous play. I think the best thing for has been her older black brother as she uses him as a role model which has made it so much easier for her to be trained for everyday things and she has gained so much confidence from him.

Funnily enough, for someone so obsessed with food she still hasn't learnt the magic word "teatime"! Strange.

Anyway, this was only supposed to be a quickie so had better go and take her Ladyship out with the others.
