Poem competition (Just for fun)
Send in your poems either ones you have written yourself or ones you know ( please credit authors name in either case )
I have two of these toys to give away to the ones we think are the best.
One toy for winner who is submitting own poem and one for winner submitting one they like.
Winner will be announced on Sunday 26th October
"This toy is a real favourite with my dogs. Called 'Travis', he will become your dog's favourite floppy friend.
He is approx. 15" long, and just the right shape to carry around. He makes a rather loud and plaintive crying sound when squeezed!
Also perfect for a puppy to snuggle up to. "

Ok, I'll start the ball rolling. This is one of my favourite Scottish poems, which I teach every year to my class. The children learn it off by heart and we often recite it, with half the class taking the part of the child and the other half taking the part of the dad. It was written by a Scots poet called Bill Keys. To get the full effect it has to read in a Scots accent. I can just picture our Scottish members reading it aloud
A DUG, A DUG
Hey,daddy, wid yi get us a dug?
A big broon Alsation? Ur a wee white Pug,
Ur a skinny wee terrier ur a big fat bull.
Aw, daddy. Get us a dug. Will ye?
N whose dugll it be when it durties the flerr?
and peesn the carpet, and messes the sterr?
Its me ur yur mammyll be taen fur a mug.
Away oot an play. Yur no needin a dug.
Bit, daddy? Thur gien thum away

Yull get wan fur nothin so ye wull.
Aw daddy. Get us a dug. Wull ye?

Dae ye think ah've goat nuthin else tae dae

Aw, hey daddy. Get us a dug. Wull ye?

Ah know whit yell get; a skite on the lug

N ahd make it a basket fur it tae sleep
N ahd take it fur runs away ower the hull.

poem
Here is a poem written when my beloved Pugsley was put to sleep on 13July this year. The poem was written by a friend Jane Horner.
FOR RONA
RONA,A LADY FULL OF GRACE
IN HER EYES A KINDNESS SHINES,
FROM HER SMILE A SOFTLY GLOW
HER GENTLE WORDS COME TO THE EAR
FOR PUGS AND GEMMA TO BE NEAR
A MUM,A FRIEND, A CARER TOO
NONE MORE CONCERNED FOR THEM
WHILE NOELLY WALKS THE PUPS ON SAND
RONA BRINGS THE COMFORTS AND
TASTY SNACKS,A COZY BED
THE POOCH-MOBILE THEY ENJOYED
THE SUN SHALL RISE AND WANE AND SET
ALWAYS SHALL PUGS BE IN HEARTS AND THOUGHTS
THE LITTLE BOY OF OF COURAGE YET
THE YEARS- GONE BY FOR PUGS NOW
SO GOOD, SO HAPPY.......NE'ER TO FORGET
THANKS TO MUM AND DAD
GOODNIGHT LITTLE LAD.

Re: Poem competition (Just for fun)
Lovely poems can we rustle up a few more for the competition?
Re: Poem competition (Just for fun)
Oh father could we possibly have a dog?
a large brown Alsatian or perhaps a little white pug?
Maybe even a underweight terrier or a heavy set bull terrier.
whichever one suits you father.perhaps you would give it some thought?
No its not quite the same in English is it?

Re: Poem competition (Just for fun)
Here is one of mine written two weeks after my gorgeous dearest Barney died.
Barney – Two weeks on
The pain in my heart has not gone
It never will.
Memories are all around me.
We did that….
We went there…..
The beach where you ran
And slipped on stones.
Ran after gulls in shallow pools
And splashed with me
In my bare feet.
Two friends together
Silent in each other’s company
But knowing what to do.
The last time, it was a cold October day
We met another dog
And played in the waves
Before heading back to the car.
For ice-cream
And a bowl of water.
Then back home in the car.
Your paw on my knee
As we ate up the miles
Glad to get home for a warm.
Although I know the pain will fade
Eventually.
Wait for me on the other side.
And I promise you, we’ll see the sun again
You will forever be
My Barney in Buttercups...

Re: Poem competition (Just for fun)
And one I wrote the day he died.
Still makes me cry now
Goodbye Barney J……..
I didn’t realise when I awoke this morning
That you would be gone so very soon.
That familiar weight on my feet
Telling me that you were there
As I slept through the night.
We woke early as we always do.
We’d had a hug and a cuddle
Eager to start the new day.
You had watched me with your big brown eyes
We’d gone downstairs together.
We shared a piece of toast
Like we have done a hundred times before.
Then waited at the door
For Minnie to come back in the house while it was still dark
And you politely stood back, waiting for her.
I search desperately in my mind
Trying to recall if you gave me any clue
That you were going to leave me
But you were the same as you always were
Every morning.
Nothing that I saw from within your soul
Made me think that you were about to leave me
On my own.
No warning came.
No paw in my hand to say goodbye.
We sat and watched the dawn
And I remember pulling mud
From your fur.
Tangled as it was.
Your eyes meeting mine with love.
You were there laughing, bouncing,
Full of fun.
Then quite suddenly
You were gone.
Taken from me when I needed you to stay.
Leaving me to grieve.
Alone.
Barney, I will miss you so very, very much.
You were my companion and my friend.
Oh dear. Can't see the screen!
He was the most wonderful dog I ever had.
Have I missed the deadline for this - only just noticed that Glenys set the closing date in October but I only spotted it this morning???

Re: Poem competition (Just for fun)
These two poems for Barney are very moving. the one line alone "Barney in buttercups" was enough to set me off. How much you loved him clear to see.
I have only just noticed the date of the thread I thought it was all in the month of November but it was started in Oct.It must have slipped through the net :sign6: :sign6: :sign6:
