Ozzie's 8 years Gotcha

Post by sallydog1 »

It was eight years last Saturday since Ozzie adopted us. He's a lovely old boy but, we're afraid, rather showing his age now (he'll be 13 next month). He still enjoys going for his off-lead walks twice each day but we no longer go as far or as fast as we used to. (We'd love to post a photo of him but haven't got the facility to download).

He has developed laryngeal paralysis which can affect some older dogs and is, apparently, particularly prevalent in labradors and retrievers. It means that his breathing can sound very harsh and loud at times and he can get a bit short of breath sometimes and pants quite a lot. He isn't in any distress, though, as his case is comparatively mild. It can be rectified by surgery but this would involve anaesthesia which, at his age, we don't really want to risk as he is generally well and still enjoys his food (of course), a wade when he gets the chance (he's not as keen on actual swimming as he used to be), regularly gets into mischief (walks with Ozzie are rarely uneventful) and can still find lost golf balls when we walk the bridle path round a local golf course - he found five today. (We don't play but our butcher does so rewards Ozzie with treats and meaty titbits in exchange for the balls!).

We're shortly going on holiday to New Brighton. We're in a lovely self-catering flat 50 yards overlooking and 50 yards from the Mersey and beach and 200 yards from a park. He loves it there.

Dogs aren't with us long so all we can do is give them lots of love and the best time ever while they're with us.
Here's to as much more time with our old chap as possible
