Giving your Heart.

Another poem from my friend Maggie:

Giving your Heart

So, Rudyard Kipling bids us beware
Of giving our hearts to a dog to tear
I have to admit in a way I agree
But without out dogs where on earth would we be?

Would we venture out in the field and woods
In our old wellie boots and our coats with hoods
Wrapped up against the rain, the sleet and the snow
And fighting the fierce winds that blow ?

Would we ever notice the first signs of spring
Hear the songs of the birds. see the trees blossoming
Feel the new grass springing soft ‘neath our feet
See the new pups, and find new friends to meet.

See our dogs run through hillsides, bracken and heather
Enjoying their freedon, the fine summer weather
Watch as they plunge in a river or brook
Their coats wet and shiny, how happy they look.

Laugh at their antics in the crisp autumn leaves
As they chase after sticks or play catch and retrieve
With the leaves that softly cascade to the ground
Silently,quietly,not making a sound.

Life without dogs would be incredibly dull
Who, then at my heartstrings would tug and would pull.
That’s why I am willing and happily prepare
To give up my heart for a dog to tear.

What a lovely poem, and so true.
