Oscar and his weight loss story

We adopted Oscar from MKF on 4th Sept 07. He weighed in at over 53kg. I've just taken him to the vets for a checkup following an ear deep clean under sedation and weighed him while I was there. He is now at his target weight of 35kg (in fact he was a whisker under!). So pleased - he is like a different dog, he's something of a superstar around the village and people are still commenting on how different he looks - he has a waist and has so much more energy - even though he's still a laid back type of guy. Just worked out weight loss in stones as I can't be doing with kilos - he was over well over 8 stone and has reduced down to about 5 & 1/2. He does still do his bottom swivel if he can't be bothered to get up though! Helen.

Really well done.
Speaking as someone who has been through exactly the same thing with Minni I know just how pleased you will be feeling for Oscar.

That is absolutely fantastic :icon_flower you have saved his life as I'm sure either his heart or his joints would have given out carrying all that extra weight - so well done. It's not easy cutting a labs food down, they can make you feel so sorry for them.

Here's to a long and healthy life Oscar.

Wow uve done so so well!!! Ive got Milo on diet, he had OCD n needed surgery, the vet said one of the kindest things i could do for him was to get his weight down, he weighed in at 43KG, hes now 36KG which is great.
It can be so hard coz as u know u melt when they look at u, its so hard denying them treats n stuff, but its for their own wellbeing.
Anyway wonderful work to u!!!! :merryxmas
Love Jackie n Milo xxxx

That is fantastic and just shows what a good owner can do!! Jess weighed in at over 41K or 6.5st (the vet wants Jess to be 35) when she came to us a few weeks ago. But exercise and no titbits and 1 low fat treat a day she has already lost just over 1.6kg or 3.5 lbs. The vet also thinks Jess may have the start of a dodgey hip / old injury. So less weight the better. It is hard though when they look at you - and in Jess's case has expected titbits in the past. But as I am sure you know the determination is worth the effort.

Congrats to you both!!

not sure we have any photos of him 'before' other than the photo that had been posted on the rehoming pages, but I did take my younger daughter's camera when we went out across frozen fields yesterday so now I just need hubby to post them! Thank you all for your supportive comments. It's actually much easier getting a dog to lose weight than doing it ones self!! Oscar doesn't really get many treats (oh poor thing), he has a pigs ear once a week on a saturday, and if my sister comes in at lunch time to walk him for us she always gives him a small rawhide chew when she leaves. Some of the old chaps around the village always give him a treat when they see him but other than that its two meals a day. Helen

you have done well with him ,my simba hes 11 now ,he only gets 1 meal a day as he gets treats during the day small dog biscuits he seems to like this better ,so the theory is we give him less then he should eat and give him treat during the day rewards etc .
yes get the photos on
