Hi all and many thanks for your kind words.

I have had the old lads for just two weeks now and they are settling in very well apart from they both have the runs, I understand this can be down to anxiety and different types of food so I have had them both to the vets for a once over and have given the necessary medicines to cope. I have put them both on a very bland diet of Boiled rice and Chicken or Fish and things are improving however I have a way to go yet. Once I get their upset tummies sorted out I have some Rheumocam for Deefer the older of the two who’s back end needs a little help. Has anybody used MSM (Methylsuphonylmethane) as a supplement to help with painful joints?

To anybody reading this board and is thinking of taking on an older dog I would recommend it! Yes there is a little more expense and yes you may only have the dog for the latter part of its life but I can tell you the reward far out ways the costs.

It was very cold here last night and this is the responce when a asked if they wanted to go for a walk.





So I'd say thats a NO then!

Just realised you mentioned MSM. Never used it on the dogs mine are still youngish, heard of it being used on race horses though, works a treat apparently. I think it would be worth a go mixed with some Glucosamine for arthritis, certainly worth a try, I am all for natural supplements.

Thank you so much for giving these old gents a wonderful forever home, I agree with you about the oldies, they have so much love to give and have a way of thanking you every day for giving them a warm place to lay their heads.

We give our old girl Millie Easeflex chews for her joints, occasionally she has to have Metacam. We have also tried jointaid for dogs which did our old boy the world of good but it doesn't suit Millie.

I hope you get the tummy problem sorted soon, I am sure they are both enjoying the rice and chicken, I know our 3 do

Yep, that definately looks like a resounding 'NO' !!!

MSM is sometimes included in Glucosamine & Chrondroitin tablets/liquids, I think it is supposed to enhance the effectiveness of the Glucosamine.
When I adopted Max aged 2yrs-ish (12 years ago), he had a slight limp which we had checked out and found on xray that his hips flew in the wind. I started him on a Glucosamine/Chron/MSM supplement from a website (Healthspan) and found it really helped - took about 6wks to have the optimum benefit if I recall. He stayed on it until needing Metacam only a couple of years ago.

I am so pleased to see the two boys so settled, I went to se them before they came into the rescue and their owner was so upset at having to give them up I really hope she sees how wonderfully happy they both look.

So Defor ( as in "D for dog" it was explained to me) and Buster have a wonderful new life.

Your lads look very much at home with you,thank you for giving them a lovely home. I agree with you about taking on an older dog,My Charles is 15 tomorrrow and came from MKF nearly 4 years ago, he is such a pleasure to have around and gives us so much love in return. With regard to MSM I used to give it to my older dogs, found it quite helpful but I have now changed to Coconut oil, I use it for allsorts for my boys, and my old boy has no signs of arthritis at all. I put a tablespoon on his food everyday...he loves it. It is best to start off with small amounts and build up slowly as if you give too much at first it can make their stools loose.
