Sue,
the lambs are being bottle fed because they were bought in as pet lambs. Some were triplets and the farmer has taken the third one off the ewe, a couple the ewe got mastitis and could not feed the lambs themselves. So the guy we get them from has so many sheep I suppose it is not worth his while bottle feeding a few as powdered milk is very expensive and I reckon a farmer looks at the return.
I am quite mad in that I love bottle feeding lambs. Lynne thinks I am bonkers.
I enjoy feeding them and watching them grow and then they help keep our grass down and then I am afraid the harsh reality is they go for slaughter....BUT ...they have had a wonderful life with the best of everything and not suffered the trauma of going through a market etc.
Our own sheep start lambing next week around the same time as Lynne but unlike her we did not have ours scanned so we do not know what to expect. The only thing I do know is that Lily had mastitis last year and so I will be bottle feeding her lamb or lambs as well!!!!
I will just say that it does not always go to plan as 2 of last years bottled lambs are still here as pets and I already have my eye on one of the littleys.!!
