Hi Peter

What a pair of smashing boys! They really look settled and it's great to hear that you're enjoying them so much. Well done for taking on the pair, it's so lovely that they can be together.

On the joint supplement... I have done a lot of research into the various similiar supplements available for horses and found that one of the best that I found, is also suitable for dogs. Made by a small company based in Derbyshire called Holistic Horse Health

www.holistichorsehealth.com

There are 3 products available, 'Cartilage Care', 'MSM Super strength' and 'Glucosamine HCL' all suitable for dogs too. What seems to mark them out from a lot of the other products is that they don't use 'fillers' to bulk out the product. I was shocked to learn that most of the products on the market use a high percentage of either dextrose (sugar) or limestone flour, for no therapeutic reason, but simply to add bulk. As many of the supplements are quite costly, the more active ingredient they contain, the less you have to feed and the more cost effective they work out to be.

The woman who runs the company I found to be really helpful in providing information, so you might want to contact her and ask about which product she's recommend and what dosage for a dog. Her name's Lesley and her email and phone number are on her website.

I know I sound like I should be on a commission from them, but having trawled through umpteen options, I was recommended this company by a vet nurse friend and was pretty impressed. Have a look and see what you think.

Hope that this might help and keep the updates coming!

Hi and thanks for the input which I have taken on board. I have started to give the boys MSM and Glucosamine now that their tums have settled down. I must admit I have never heard of Coconut oil and may start them on this later on!

Buster the 10 year old is fine and enjoys his three walks a day, Defer the 11 year old limps a bit and needs some help, which I have but need to give his tum rest time before I start that treatment.

Defer seems to enjoy time out but Buster is my Shadow if I breath in, he gets in the space which is OK with me. I am also slowly introducing them to my Landrover Discovery so where I go the dogs can come with me.

Karen & George Thanks for the info I will give them a call.

Peter

Peter, I use a supplement containing MSM for my horse - I'll also have a look at that site too Karen. I think it does help - it takes a while to get into the system but I have found it to help with my horses 'short striding' due to an arthritic hock. This supplement contains MSM, Glucosamine, HA and green lipped mussel.

Another thing to try if you haven't already is oil in the diet. A lot of people here feed sardines in oil and cod liver oil too which helps the joints.

Glad to hear their tummies have settled - they look so adorable!

Hi all this is Deefer and Buster reporting back about the new Dad we have adopted. Whilst not as good as our real Mum who we miss a lot he’s not so bad for a human, sometimes we even allow him to sit on the settee, (but not for too long as we don’t want to spoil him), my poor brother Buster who follows our new Dad everywhere, the garden, the bed room even the Bog does seem quite sad from time to time but we all do our best to cheer him.

Dad has also put us on some so called special food for old Labs! What I would say is NO lab was consulted when this so called special food was tested, Yuk! But we eat it just to keep him happy. We both had upset tums when we first arrived but we are OK now, thank God, no more medicine and we were getting sick of boiled rice.

These Humans are a funny lot, we were in the woods the other day and just let our new Dad off his lead when we stumbled upon some piles of Rabbit poo which of course we needed to have a little roll in, It helps condition our coats, when he started some sort of tribal dance, shouting and jumping up and down pointing his finger shouting you two stink. Well I ask you! And when we got home he washed us both down in CLEAN water then dried us with warm towels, WHAT A WAST OF GOOD POO.

It’s getting time for our Dads walk so I had better wake him up and get his lead.

Hi all, well it’s my new dads birthday today he says he’s 21 err mm in his dreams, anyway Buster and I got him a couple of hide treats which we were going to share however Buster had a little accident and eat his so I had to eat mine, shame! We took him for a walk instead but that’s not the real news.

You will need to get a little closer because I can’t shout this out it’s supposed to be a secret, Buster has a girlfriend! He’s sooo moon struck, wagging his tale, I’ve saved you some of my dinner; you can have my treat, every time he sees her. Silly old duffer!

I call her miss bossy boots, I have to say she’s a bit scary, do you know! She walked into my house yesterday whilst I was taking a nap and nicked my chew from right under my nose, Cheek!

Next time their out together I will take my camera and post a shot.

Oh no it looks like we might be in the fertiliser when my dad comes home, Buster has just murdered the new toy we got yesterday, think it’s time to get on my bed and pretend to be asleep. :snooze:
